Google uses more than 200 ranking factors as the checker in its algorithm for judging your website. Why's keyword use and their placement on the page so important? Google, and other search engines, use keywords to assess what your webpage is about and then how relevant it is to a user search query. If you’re not sure what a keyword is, remember that it can also be a keyword phrase such as ‘vitamins to help with arthritis’. These are known as long-tail keywords. A keyword can also be just a single word (although these are much harder to rank for as there’s more competition). Choosing your keywords is the kick-off point of the SEO process. If you choose irrelevant ones, you’ll see little progress with your SEO. The second step? Positioning your keywords in the right content elements of that page at the places where search engines pay attention when they're crawling your webpage content. The second powerful indicator for Google ranking is the backlink. What are they? Backlinks (or inbound links) are links from external sites that point towards your website. Each backlink your site has is strong sign of popularity or authority. Backlinks are important for your SEO because Google will rank a site higher if it has quality backlinks. Another reason to get yourself quality backlinks is to attract visitors to arrive at your website. You can't set up a website, and then just hope for the best that people will find their way to your website without showing them the way. This type of links are the signposts they need. Create sticky content

One of the best ways to achieve backlinks is to earn them. If your content is useful and relevant, then other website owners will want to reference your site and give a backlink. So it makes good sense to invest time in creating informative and compelling content. You can do this through your webpage content or your keyword-optimised blogs. Or create an informative white paper or case study and post it on your site. SEO experts call this kind of material 'sticky' content, precisely because it attracts links. Promoting this strong sticky content further through social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ will also help you build all-important backlinks because others will want to link to it.

Why it's quality that counts

Not all backlinks are the same. Not all backlinks are good for your website. The quality backlinks you should be seeking out are the ones that are directed from relevant authoritative domainsin your niche or sector. If the site linking to your site has a high Domain Authority and contains comparable or related content, your backlink will be good for your SEO and visibility. Here are some important points about choosing backlinks:

  1. Google judges relevance as a high trust indicator. If your website is about specialist health products for dogs, then receiving a backlink from a totally unrelated site about adult health insurance will be of little benefit. Google is not easily fooled. So when you go about building backlinks, check that the website you are linking to is in the same or a related niche.
  2. Google PageRank (Google PR) is one of the criteria Google uses to judge a page's relevance or importance. Important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear in Google’s top 10. Google PageRank (PR) goes from 0 - 10 and is awarded according to the number and quality of a website’s backlinks. The more quality backlinks, the higher Google Pagerank. Raising your Google page rank is highly effective for SEO to boost your organic search results.
  3. If a backlink to your website is added to a page that links to high quality sites, ideally websites in the same sector or area of business as your site, it’s a good thing. Why? Because the search engines will conclude that your site should be classed with those high quality sites. So choose your backlink carefully.
  4. The top level domain (TLD) extension (that's .com, .co.uk, .fr) is another point to factor in for your backlinks. It's far more effective to receive a backlink from websites that have similar audiences to yours. So if you're based in the UK, generally and unless they have very high page authority like CNN, links from sites in another geographical area such as New Zealand, will be less beneficial.
  5. The anchor text you choose to link your backlink to is another important point to consider. These are the words that you choose to link out from. The quality of a backlink is better if the anchor text – that’s the words that form the clickable text of the link – either match or are similar to, the keywords that you’re trying to optimize for. To get best SEO effect, use words that contain relevant keywords. Don't, for example, just use 'read here' or 'click now'. Instead, think more creatively. Use 'read about food for senior dogs here' or 'click for advice on nutritious puppy food'. You can use SEO Page Optimizer as a checker to see how well you're using your anchor text. Understanding the type of backlink
  1. Anchor Text: The words or text that you use to link out from, either to an external site or to internal pages on your own site. For best SEO value, use relevant keywords for the hyperlink, rather than just 'click here'.
  2. Link Juice: SEO consultants use this term to describe the extra SEO value you get when another webpage links to your webpage. This extra value improves the domain authority and ultimately search visibility. Providing of course it is a site that you benefit from linking to.
  3. No-Follow Link: No-follow links stop search engine bots following a link. So if a website links back to you with a no-follow, you won't benefit from the link juice. People though will be able to follow the links so these links still have a functional use. Most often, developers use a no-follow if they're linking to an unreliable site or one that does not bring them any valuable link juice. Links from comments on blogs are often given a no-follow.
  4. Do-Follow Link: Ordinarily, any links that you add into a blog post are do-follow links, and do send on link juice.
  5. Linking Root Domains: This is how the number of backlinks coming into a website from a single domain is termed. It might be that one website has linked to your website many times but it will only be counted by Google as one linked root domain.
  6. Low-Quality Links: Poor quality links can have a negative result for your organic ranking. Google’s algorithms can tell the difference between good and bad quality links. Your site can be penalised if you have too many poor quality links. Low-quality links are links that come from link-farm sites, automated sites or spam.
  7. Internal Links: These are the links direct the user from one page to another within your website. Creating these is known as internal linking.
